I use gmail.com as my email client. So when ever I see there is an email and it came from ‘launchpad…’ I tend to think that there might be a branch attachment or the bug has expired. In general this service is confirming bugs that should not be confirmed, I don’t like that.

Atleast it should be changed to something like ‘Bugbot” so that I don’t have to open that bug mail at all and mark it as read already.

Natty: A bore cycle from bug triage perspective

Ubuntu 11.04 is out and development has already started on Oneiric but one thing is clear; Natty was arguably not that interesting as Lucid or Maverick when you contribute as a bug triager for Desktop packages.

Triage, like any other activity needs motivation, to be done effectively but I totally lost that motivation during the Natty cycle. Few people might already have noticed that I did not contribute to the desktop as I used to in the last couple of cycles.

“Empathy” is a very good example. The nice empathy folks released empathy 2.34 for Ubuntu(and other distros not using gnome3) but I did not really want to forward bugs/feature_requests upstream bug from launchpad to bugzilla, I did not had any interest there because in every case I had the doubt “what if this feature exists in empathy-3.0″ or “the bug is not there or maybe there is no need for the feature in the new version”

In the same way some other packages like nautilus, totem, evolution, rhythmbox to whom I was subscribed to but did ‘not-so-regular’ triage were not appealing at all. Even they were like a burden, I got their bug mails but did not read none. So in the end I ended up unsubscribing as those bugs were making my mail box crowded

One other package that I was very interested was Gwibber, I contributed to it in both Lucid and Maverick cycle but last cycle gwibber saw very little changes and even its affected by a few regressions so no contributions there neither. Hopefully gwibber will see major changes in O.

One Thing interesting is/was Unity, the rapid development pace made it even more compelling. So the whole Natty cycle I only worked on Unity but I know I can do more than that.

Also I read some irc logs that the bug days were getting very low turn-outs. So that also supports my words. I have really high hopes for Oneiric. I believe it could be the most interesting cycle for any one interested to contribute to Ubuntu. So rock on!

PS: I did not get the VISA to attend UDS :/

Help Chromium blend into Light Themes

Google Chrome or Chromium is a really great web browser that seem to be getting more and more market share but there is a problem with its look in Ubuntu-10.10 and now in Natty as well. it does not use the window border colors from the theme which makes it look something like this under Natty.

Yeah, ugly. Fortunately the nice people at google have made it really easy for theme authors to support better theming until we have client side windows decorations(wayland, anyone?). So please if you want to help with this please assign this bug to you and propose a merge request for lp:light-themes

The fix should be simple I believe since there is a sample fix for Ambiance theme in the launchpad bug from Google’s Elliot Glaysher. Your help is really appreciated.
